Madekwe came from a multicultural family. Her birthplace was within South London. Madekwe is English but her father was Nigerian. She was raised on the South London Council Estate. She went to The Brit School aged 14. In London, she studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in which her acting diploma was earned. She was on stage in numerous productions during her time at school like the King Henry V, as Princess Katherine as well as Wuthering Heights, as Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe got her start in acting through a short film called Storm Damage. Since then, she has made guest appearances in Teachers, Doctors, Casualty as well as Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe's debut film was her role in the Woody Allen 2007 film Cassandra's Dream. She starred opposite Colin Farrell & Ewan MacGregor. Ashley grew in arenas or baseball fields because her four athletic brothers all played baseball, hockey, and both in the summer and winter. Ashley was unable to walk, but was able to dance. As a result, at the age of 2 when she was two, she began to learn about Baby Ballet. Ashley was captivated by dance when she was just a few years old. After graduating from the high school she attended, Ashley danced competitively in the highest divisions of ballet, tap, jazz pointe, acrobatics musical theatre, lyrical, and hip-hop. She was the top soloist in major competitions such as International Dance Challenge, Showstoppers 56-7-8 Showtime, Flash Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance, were all awarded to Ashley.
