Simone Biles
Simone Arianne Biles (/sI’moUn ‘baI@lz/; March 14, 1997; 4) is an American artistic gymnast. Shannon Miller holds the record for the most Olympic medals won by an American gymnast, having won seven. She also ranks equal ninth in total. With 25 World Championship medals won, she is the highest-ranked gymnast from the history of the Gymnastics World Championships. Many believe that she may be the most successful gymnast of all time. Joe Biden awarded Biles the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022. Biles was awarded individual gold medals at Rio's 2016 Summer Olympics. Bronze on balance beam, vault, and all-around were her medals. Biles also won bronze in the United States Team, which was nicknamed the "Final Five". Biles was unable to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics because of "the twisties" the air balance disorder that affects her ability to maintain her balance. As part of the US team, she took home a medal on balance beam and a silver. Her partial withdrawal, emphasis on mental health, safety, and perseverance were praised. She is also a five-time World all-around champion (2013-15 and 2018-19), five times World floor exercise champion (2013)-2015 and 2018-2019) Three times World balance beam champion (2014)-2015, 2019), two times World vault champion (2018), and was part of the gold-winning American teams at the four World Artistic Gymnastics Championships (2014 and 2015, as well as 2018, 2018 and 2019). She also is an World silver medalist on the the vault and balance beam (2013 and 2014) and balance beam (2013 and 2014), as well as three-time World bronze medalist in vault (2015, 2013, and the year 2018 on bars that are uneven).
Biles is the gymnast with the highest number of World medals (25) and also the most World gold medals (19), having surpassed Vitaly Scherbo's record-breaking 23 World medals. She won her 25th and 24th, both gold medals, at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart. Biles holds the record for the most all-around World titles (5). She is the sixth female to receive an individual all-around championship at the Olympics and World Championships. Biles is the tenth American female gymnast and the first American female gymnast to win an individual World medal for every event and was also the first female gymnast, since Daniela Silivas (1988), to win a medal at every Olympic Games or World Championships. Biles was the third of from four siblings. She was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 14th 1997. All four children were put in foster care. Biles' maternal grandfather Ron Biles and Nellie Cayetano Biles discovered that Shanon had been placed in foster care. They began caring for Shanon's kids temporarily in Spring, Texas in 2000. In 2003, Simone and Adria were adopted by the couple. Shanon's aunt, Ron's sister Harriet has adopted the two children. Biles holds Belizean citizenship through her adoptive mom and refers to Belize as her second home. Biles as well as her family members are Catholic.
